AA Standards for Accommodation

Establishments offering accommodation assessed by the AA are graded under a set of quality standards compiled by the AA. The aim of the quality standards is to make accommodation grades and standards easy to understand and to give you confidence that establishments meet the standards you expect.

Types of Accommodation

Under these standards, accommodation is assessed under the categories: Hotel, Guest Accommodation, Budget Hotel, Self-Catering Accommodation and Caravan and Camping Parks.
Hotel and Guest Accommodation are divided into sub-categories or designators which provide more information about the type of establishment.

Hotel Categories

Hotel - A formal accommodation offering full hotel services.
Town House Hotel - A high quality property of individual and distinctive style with a maximum of 50 rooms set in a town or city centre. High staff-to-guest ratio. Public areas may be limited. Possibly no dinner served, but room service available instead.
Country House Hotel - A hotel with ample grounds or gardens set in a rural or semi-rural situation with an emphasis on peace and quiet.

Guest Accommodation Categories

Establishments in each of these categories should fulfil all Guest Accommodation minimum entry requirements.
B&B: Accommodation provided in a private house by the owner for up to six paying guests.
Guest House Accommodation: for more than six paying guests, with the owner and staff providing more services, e.g. dinner.
Farmhouse: B&B or guesthouse accommodation provided on a working farm.
Restaurant with Rooms: A restaurant offering overnight accommodation.
Guest Accommodation: Any establishment that meets the minimum entry requirements and chooses to use this general category description.

Self-Catering Accommodation

Self-Catering Accommodation is the provision of accommodation for fixed term rental for holiday and business purposes. The normal letting term is one week, however, shorter periods may be arranged. Properties may be stand-alone units or part of a larger development in the form of holiday cottage or apartment schemes. In all cases units are self-contained, comprising an independent entrance, a minimum of one bedroom and bathroom with linen supplied, an equipped kitchen with cooking and laundry facilities, together with ancillary dining and lounge areas.
