AA Merit Scores
In addition to the star classification, we give each hotel an AA Merit Score in the form of a percentage. This indicates the level of quality achieved within each star rating and will help you to compare hotels with the same number of stars.
Red Star Hotels
Each year we select the best hotels in each rating. These hotels stand out as the very best in the British Isles, regardless of style. The selected Inspectors' Choice hotels are identified by Red Stars.
Star ratings for Guest Accommodation
Bed & Breakfast accommodation assessed by the AA are graded using a Star rating. Establishments are awarded one star at the simplest level up to five stars at the luxury end, based on an assessment of cleanliness, service, bedroom comfort, bathroom facilities and the standard of food.
Highly Commended Guest Accommodation
Yellow stars recognise the very best guest accommodation within the three, four and five star rating levels.
Breakfast and Dinner awards
For guest accommodation, the eggcup and pie symbols indicate a very special breakfast or dinner, with an emphasis on freshly prepared local ingredients. Please place small copies of the awards before the heading similar to the layout of the other paragraphs in this section.
There are occasions when a hotel or B&B may be listed subject to confirmation of the AA quality rating. These establishments are identified by the 'Unconfirmed' symbol.
Restaurants with Rooms
A Restaurant with Rooms is usually a local destination for eating out which also offers accommodation albeit on a smaller scale. Most have 12 bedrooms or less and public areas may be limited to the restaurant itself
