The Yeats Room at Ballymaloe House

aaicon Restaurant %

Ivan and Myrtle Allen were way, way ahead of the curve some 50 years ago when they opened a restaurant in their farmhouse. No-one had heard the term 'farm to fork', nobody was doing anything quite like it. Fast forward to 2014 and there is a cookery school and hotel accommodation, and the idea of fresh produce brought to the table in double-quick time and served simply just seems normal. The place is still run by the Allen family (sadly, Ivan died in 1998) and its reputation has spread internationally. The restaurant is supplied by the farm and walled garden and the two chefs (Jason Fahey and Gillian Hegarty) have a wealth of superb foodstuffs to work with. The four dining rooms are traditional and comfortable. Cod landed at nearby Ballycotton might appear in a first course with salsa verde, while another starter combines a salad of garden leaves with Crozier blue cheese, pear and walnuts. Main-course Gubbeen ham is baked with Saint-Véran (a white Burgundy) and comes with pommes boulangère and spinach, and there's a pre-theatre menu, too.
