The Restaurant at Abbeyglen Castle Hotel

Sky Road, Clifden
aaicon Restaurant %

The crenallated Victorian fantasy of Abbeyglen Castle basks in views sweeping from Connemara's Twelve Bens mountains to the shores of Clifden Bay. Ensconced in 12 acres of lovely grounds, it is just a five-minute walk from the bustle and cosy pubs of Clifden village, but you might find it hard to drag yourself away from its classic country-house comforts. In the restaurant at dinner, the décor is bold and bright with artworks on cherry-red walls, crystal chandeliers, and a pianist tinkles away on a grand piano. Expect classic cooking built on excellent local materials. As you'd hope, given the closeness to the briny, fish and seafood makes a good showing - fresh oysters, seafood chowder, or poached salmon with hollandaise - while meat could turn up as slow-roasted suckling pig teamed with braised belly pork, apple chutney, celeriac crisps and a grain mustard reduction. Puddings finish slap in the comfort zone with the likes of chocolate bread-and-butter pudding or rhubarb crumble with crème anglaise.
