The Restaurant at Belleek Castle

aaicon Restaurant %

Belleek may call itself a castle and even look like one, but this pocket-sized stately home in a thousand-acre forested estate on the banks of the River Moy is actually a Victorian folly whose dainty 19th-century Gothic gables and skinny turrets wouldn't put up much of a fight if shots were fired in anger. In fact, the only popping noises to be heard are caused by the opening of champagne bottles at one of the many weddings taking place. Inside, oak panelling, coffered ceilings, chandeliers, and crimson walls hung with tapestries make for a suitably faux-medieval baronial setting in the dining room, which was originally the library of the manor house. The kitchen takes well-sourced local ingredients - some foraged seasonally in the surrounding grounds and woodlands - as the eminently solid building blocks of a straightforward country-house menu. Fresh hot-smoked salmon makes for a deliciously simple starter, ahead of a duo of duck (pan-roasted breast, and braised leg in pastry) served with potato and swede gratin and light veal jus.
