White's Restaurant at Shirley Arms Hotel

Carrickmacross
aaicon Restaurant %

An easy hour's drive from both Dublin and Belfast, the Shirley Arms is a handsome, honey-hued, stone-built Georgian coaching house transformed into a stylish modern hotel and restaurant. White's Restaurant takes its name from the hotel's original title, and goes for a smart contemporary look with high ceilings, large windows and timber dividers to break up the space. The kitchen turns out a please-all repertoire of easygoing modern dishes that dips into an eclectic bag of global influences, as in a well-made seafood risotto starter which gets a kick of Asian fire from chilli sambal, and Mediterranean warmth from lemon zest, mascarpone and parmesan shavings. Main course takes refuge in a straightforward modern serving of duck - honey-roasted suprême and confit leg - partnered by braised red cabbage and a tart redcurrant jus. Awaiting at the end, vanilla crème brûlée comes with raspberry sorbet, lemon curd and shortbread.
