With a sweeping Palladian mansion at its heart, the Powerscourt resort has a couple of golf courses, a luxurious spa and classy bedrooms. There's also an Irish pub called McGills, but the main event food-wise is the swish and glamorous Sika Restaurant. There are glorious mountain views from its third-floor dining room, a space decorated with an upscale finish while maintaining plenty of the room's original character. There's a chef's table, too. The food is contemporary Irish inasmuch as it takes first-class regional produce and applies both modern and classical techniques. Take a starter of pan-fried scallops, for example, with Jerusalem artichokes, pancetta and apple balsamic jus, or a main course dish of Atlantic halibut with parsnip purée, brown shrimps and a vermouth cream. A meaty main course might be Challans duck breast served with its confit leg, plus Savoy cabbage, black pudding and a pickled garlic jus. Desserts are no less creative and well crafted; lemon tart with toasted almond ice cream, for example, or apple fondant with a Granny Smith sorbet.
