The Restaurant at Hunter's Hotel

Newrath Bridge, Rathnew
aaicon Restaurant %

Great venerability resides not just in the stones of Hunter's, Ireland's oldest coaching inn, but in the ownership, which has passed through generations of the Gelletlie family since 1825. Barely half-an-hour from the Dun Laoghaire ferry, it sits in riotously colourful gardens, its dining room a vision of crisp linen, mahogany and fine living. A small team of dedicated, volubly friendly staff runs the show. Expect daily-changing menus of classically informed Irish cooking, starting with spanking-fresh crab tian in dill mayonnaise, and progressing via an intermediate course (perhaps leek and potato soup or lime and ginger sorbet) to the likes of crisply roasted breast and leg of duckling with blueberry sauce and pomme purée, or a loaded seafood brochette in curry dressing. Strawberry pannacotta to finish comes in a cocktail glass, lifted with a portion of balsamic-marinated strawberries, or you might be tempted by a selection of Ireland's new generation of artisan cheeses.
