In the week that many pay packets are seeing the adverse effects of income tax changes and the new USC levy for the first time, AA Home Insurance can reveal that 85% of us are making a conscious effort to reduce energy consumption and minimise our household bills. This is according to the findings of a nationwide AA Home Insurance Poll of more than 21,000 respondents.
“With less money to waste on bills these days, not only are we striving to reduce fuel consumption while driving, we’re also looking to our homes,” says John Farrell, Director of AA Home Insurance.
The findings of the latest AA Home Insurance poll also indicates that we are better at implementing some energy saving measures than others. Among the most common measures employed are taking showers instead of baths, correct insulation of hot water tanks and use of energy saving bulbs.
90% of respondents of the AA Home Insurance poll said that they deliberately take showers rather than baths, which is also good news for water consumption levels. 86% said they have a lagging jacket or some other form of insulation on their hot water cylinder and 84% said they use energy saving bulbs over traditional incandescent light bulbs, which use two thirds less energy and last far longer.
According to the AA Home Insurance Poll we are not so diligent when it comes to draft proofing our windows and doors, heating only the required quantity of hot water and regulating our central heating systems.
73% of respondents admitted to not having implemented additional draft proofing to their external windows and doors. Only 45% said they restrict their heating to individual rooms, leaving the central heating needlessly blasting in unoccupied areas. 52% engage in the lazy habit of regularly heating more water than required. 51% do not follow their boiler’s servicing schedule despite evidence that it can improve its energy efficiency by 10%*.
“In keeping with the topic of cutting down household bills, homeowners should also look to get the right cover at the right price when it comes to their home insurance,” says Farrell. “There really are considerable saving to be made.”
