The Sticky Walnut
11 Charles Street, Chester, CH2 3AZ
2 rosettes

With its shop front exterior and rough-and-ready rustic vibe, The Sticky Walnut is a neighbourhood restaurant for the 21st-century-unpretentious, chilled-out and serious about the end product. It is spread over two floors, with chunky wooden tables, blackboards and an open kitchen. On the plate is some seriously good stuff based on excellent seasonal ingredients. There’s a broadly European spin to much of the menu and both concept and execution are pretty much bang on.

First course chicken liver pâté with apple and pear chutney and buttery toasted focaccia delivers complementary flavours and shows refinement in its presentation. Or choose squab pigeon breast with quince, salsify, caraway and meat juices, before a main course of fillet of brill matched with pumpkin and parmesan risotto and sautéed wild mushrooms. Meaty mains bring full-bore flavours, perhaps braised beef shin with truffle chips and onion purée. With cracking desserts like a deconstructed lime cheesecake with pecan butter biscuits and chocolate sorbet, this is a kitchen that delivers real impact in a relaxed, modern manner.
