A number of changes are in store for motorists in Galway City, as the on-going roadworks finish up on Lough Atalia Rd. These major works have been underway since the middle of March and are due to finish up at the end of this week (29th May), as scheduled.
However, Galway City Council has decided to maintain the one-way system on Lough Atalia Rd and College Rd on a three-week trial basis. These changes aim to encourage a better flow of traffic and reduce congestion in this part of Galway city.
This trial system will be in place until Fri 19th June and by this date, Galway City Council hope to assess the traffic situation on Lough Atalia Rd/ College Rd and make a decision on whether this should be implemented on a permanent basis.
The introduction of this one-way traffic system means a number of changes for motorists in Galway city and extra care is needed as motorists get used to the new structure. Here are the main changes in place as part of this new system:
Travelling west towards Galway Harbour/ Salthill
There are not many changes for westbound traffic on Lough Atalia Rd. Motorists will follow the one-way system along the road and can exit, as before, at the Fairgreen Rd jct or continue under the railway bridge and onto the Dock Rd towards Salthill. Westbound traffic will only be able to access College Rd by travelling along Lough Atalia Rd and exiting at the Fairgreen Rd jct.
Travelling east towards Moneenageisha
If you’re travelling east from Merchants Rd and Forthill St onto Lough Atalia Rd, you will continue under the railway bridge. After this point, motorists will have to turn left at the Fairgreen Rd jct. They will then continue on Fairgreen Rd, take a right turn onto College Rd and continue on towards Moneenageisha.
Other important points to note:
1. There will be no straight-through for traffic from Bóthar Bhreandain Uí Eithir onto Ceannt Station/ Fairgreen Rd.
Motorists travelling from Bóthar Bhreandain Uí Eithir will turn left along the one-way system by College Rd before making a right turn to access Ceannt Station and Fairgreen Rd via Lough Atalia Rd.
2. Traffic lights at Moneenageisha
Traffic signals at Moneenageisha jct will continue to ban right turn movements from Moneenageisha Rd onto College Rd and the right turn from Dublin Rd onto Wellpark Rd.
3. Local access to Lough Atalia Rd/ College Rd
Motorists exiting properties on Lough Atalia Rd will be required to turn right at all times, and follow diversions into Fairgreen Rd.
Motorists exiting properties on College Rd, will be required to continue to turn towards Moneenageisha at all times, and follow diversions into Lough Atalia Rd / Fairgreen Rd.
