Newlands Cross Upgrade Project

date-icon 13 Dec 2013  author-icon Posted by AA Roadwatch

The Newlands Cross Upgrade Project is well underway and expected to be completed in Spring 2015. This will mean motorists will be able to drive from Cork to Belfast without encountering any traffic lights. Up until now works on the N7 have involved utility diversions, drainage and temporary road construction. But now the temporary roads are completed, traffic will be redirected onto these lanes and it will clear the way for the real work on the flyover to begin.

Have a look at this simulation to see exactly how traffic flow will look when the first set of changes come into effect outbound on the N7/ Naas Rd from Sat 14th Dec. To view the simulation click here.

Three lanes, including a bus lane will remain in operation, filter lanes onto Fonthill and Belgard Roads will also remain available. The new lanes will be narrower and a 60kph statutory speed limit will be in place through the works area.

Cyclists are not permitted to travel on the temporary lanes. There are no dedicated cyclist or pedestrian facilities south of Newlands Cross. A diversionary route will be in place from Newlands Cross towards Citywest via Fonthill Rd and Boot Rd. In the interests of safety cyclists should use this route.

Inbound traffic on the N7/ Naas Rd will be redirected from early January – further details will be available closer to the time.
