11 Apr The Best Honeymoon Destinations in Italy

We’ve teamed up with Travel Counsellors to give you an expert opinion on the best romantic places to spend your honeymoon in Italy.

Travelling in Italy is one of those really special experiences in life. There are very few places where history, art, fashion, food and la dolce vita (“the good life”) intermingle so effortlessly. Few places offer such variety and few visitors leave without a strong desire to return. With so much to offer as well as a short flight time, romantic Italy really is a fantastic destination for Irish honeymooners.

The Amalfi Coast

honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast

The beautiful Amalfi Coast is famed for its stunning towns and villages perched on jagged cliffs, and offers the perfect combination of history and nature. The Amalfi Coast has inspired many a love story and offers a choice of fairy-tale locations. From the tiny villages tumbling down the hillside to meet the sea, to cosmopolitan resorts with a truly romantic ambience, you’ll find that each location provides a unique honeymoon setting.

Along the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Positano are two gorgeous places for couples to visit on their honeymoon. Positano, one of the most picturesque and exclusive resorts on the Amalfi Coast, is the perfect place to experience the charm of Italy. You can spend your time browsing in its boutiques and souvenir shops, sipping a drink and people-watching in an open-air café, or sunbathing on one of its little beaches. Stunning Sorrento, which sits on a clifftop above the shore, has inspired poets and painters for centuries – and Byron, Keats and Dickens all came here as part of the Grand Tour. The town has ancient origins and an attractive historic centre, but today Sorrento is a modern resort that makes a great base for exploring some of Italy’s great sights: Pompeii, Naples and Herculaneum and you can also easily take a day trip by ferry to the dreamy island of Capri.

For a total change of scenery you could also visit the bustling city of Venice. Venice is a really fun place to visit on your honeymoon as the two of you can really just go and get lost in the maze of tiny cobbled courtyards and winding back streets, unique waterways and striking bridges. There are plenty of wine-tasting and wine tours as well as festivals and cultural events all year round in Venice for you to enjoy.  The best ways to get around Venice are on foot or by water buses so make sure to take some comfortable shoes suitable for walking and jumping onto your taxi back to your hotel by water after a few glasses of sweet Italian wine.
