Losing your pet can be a worrying time. If they’re lost or stolen and not found within 30 days, you’re covered up to their value (up to €3,000), plus up to €1,000 towards advertising and up to €500 towards a reward. Your dog needs to be microchipped for this cover to apply.

Dog Insurance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) ✨

Three types: Time Limited, Maximum Benefit and Lifetime. Each covers vet fees for accidents and illnesses, with different limits and time periods, so you can choose what suits your dog and your budget. All three come with a choice of €3,000, €5,000 or €7,000 vet fee limits.

A few things sit outside every cover type, worth knowing before you buy:

  • Pre-existing conditions: any injury, illness or condition that started, or first showed symptoms, before your policy began
  • The waiting period: accidents within 48 hours, or illnesses within 14 days, of your policy start date aren’t covered (this doesn’t apply when you renew)
  • Preventative and routine care: things like vaccinations, neutering, nail clipping, flea and worm treatments, or breeding and pregnancy
  • Illnesses that vaccination could have prevented, if your dog isn’t up to date with their vaccinations
  • Restricted breeds: Restricted breeds are not limited to breeds listed under the control of dogs act -any dog listed (including if they are mixed or crossed with) under the Third Party Liability section of your policy wording.
  • Commercial, security, racing or breeding use, and incidents at your business or workplace

For the full list, see your policy wording document.

No. Dog insurance is there for unexpected vet bills, such as accidents or illness. It doesn’t cover routine or preventative treatment like vaccinations, neutering, or flea, tick and worming treatments. Your dog needs a yearly health check, including a dental check, to keep the cover valid.

Yes. There’s no upper age limit, and you can insure puppies from 8 weeks old.

No, pre-existing conditions aren’t covered. You also can’t claim for an illness that first showed symptoms within 14 days of your policy starting, or an accident or injury within the first 2 days.

The excess is the amount you choose to pay towards each claim, per condition, per policy year, from €75 to €275. If your dog is 5 or older, a 15% bill share also applies, calculated on what’s left after your excess. Full worked examples are in your policy wording.

Restricted breeds are not limited to breeds listed under the control of dogs act -any dog listed (including if they are mixed or crossed with) under the Third Party Liability section of your policy wording.

Our claims team can pay your vet directly. Please ask your vet if they’re happy to do this.

You can also ask your vet to submit the claim on your behalf, by clicking on the link on our claims page.
