AA Ireland’s latest fuel price analysis shows welcome relief for motorists in July, with both petrol and diesel prices decreasing compared to June, helping to reduce motoring costs for many drivers.
Diesel prices fell to an average of €1.73 per litre in July, down 15 cents from June’s average of €1.88 per litre. Petrol prices also decreased, falling to an average of €1.75 per litre, down 9 cents from June’s average of €1.84 per litre.
EV charging tariffs also saw updates during July. Electric Ireland introduced new residential electricity prices, including changes to its Night Boost tariff, while ESB ecars restructured its public charging network pricing into two speed tiers: up to 50kW (AC) and above 50kW (DC fast/high-power). Pay-as-you-go customers on the faster tier will see increases of 6–8 cent per kWh from 1 July, around €3.24 to €4.31 extra per charge, based on a 77kWh ID.4 charging from 10% to 80%, as ecars merged its previous 50–150kW and 150kW+ tiers into a single rate.
Key changes from June to July:
- Diesel: €1.73 per litre on average in July (down 15 cents from €1.88 in June)
- Petrol: €1.75 per litre on average in July (down 9 cents from €1.84 in June)
- Home EV charging: Electric Ireland introduced new residential electricity prices from 1 July, including changes to its Night Boost tariff.
- Public EV charging: ESB ecars restructured pricing with DC Fast & High Power PAYG pricing now €0.72 per kWh.
An AA Ireland spokesperson said:
“Motorists will welcome the reduction in both petrol and diesel prices this month, particularly following several months of higher fuel costs. While the decrease is encouraging, fuel prices remain influenced by international market conditions and can change quickly.”
“Electric vehicle drivers also saw updates to charging tariffs during July across both home electricity plans and public charging networks. With electricity prices changing, now is a good time to review your electricity tariff to ensure it includes a reduced night rate or dedicated EV charging window in order to get the best value.”
AA Ireland notes that fuel prices continue to be influenced by global market conditions, including international oil supply, geopolitical uncertainty and fluctuations in currency markets. While fuel prices eased during July, volatility remains a feature of global energy markets and could impact prices in the coming weeks.
Vehicle Maintenance Plays an Important Role
AA Ireland is also reminding motorists that regular vehicle maintenance can improve fuel efficiency and reduce running costs.
“Simple checks such as maintaining the correct tyre pressure, servicing your vehicle regularly and replacing worn air filters can all help improve efficiency,” the spokesperson said. “Keeping a vehicle properly maintained not only improves safety but can also make a noticeable difference to fuel consumption over time.”
