How to Choose Car Insurance in Ireland

Published 13th October 2026Read Time 5 min

Choosing car insurance in Ireland takes more than comparing the first price you see. The cover, excess and claims process matter when something goes wrong. It also helps to review your options at renewal and decide whether you need roadside assistance alongside the policy.

This guide is for drivers in the Republic of Ireland choosing a policy, nearing renewal or considering breakdown cover.

In short

  • Compare cover, excess and claims support alongside the premium.
  • Check that the insurer is authorised to provide cover in Ireland and review how it handles claims and complaints.
  • Use the renewal notice, which arrives at least 20 working days before your policy ends, to compare your options.
  • Keep the details on your policy accurate, including your vehicle, mileage and drivers.
  • Check whether you already have breakdown assistance before buying separate cover.

Prioritising cover and support

The price is easy to spot. The cover behind it takes more thought. Third party only meets the legal minimum and covers your liability for injury or damage to others. Third party, fire and theft adds protection for your own car against fire and theft. Comprehensive is the widest of the usual levels and covers damage to your own car after an accident too. Read each policy's limits, excess and exclusions before comparing prices.

Find out how claims work. Can you report an incident outside office hours? What documents might you need? Does a benefit depend on using an approved repairer? These details can matter more to you than a small difference in premium.

You can check the insurer's authorisation or passporting status through the Central Bank of Ireland's registers. Also look at its complaints process and recent customer feedback. AA Ireland is a broker and compares cover across a panel of insurers, so check which insurer underwrites the policy you are offered.

Navigating renewal

A renewal notice is a chance to review your policy. Your insurer must send it and your no claims discount certificate at least 20 working days before cover ends. Compare fresh quotes for similar cover, as the premium and terms can change from year to year. The CCPC's renewal guide explains what to check.

When the notice arrives:

  • Compare its price and cover with quotes from other providers.
  • Check whether the car, address, mileage or named drivers have changed.
  • Confirm your no claims discount is recorded correctly.
  • Review the excess, limits and optional benefits.
  • Ask your current insurer whether it can improve the offer if you find a better comparable quote.

AA Ireland offers car, home and travel insurance, but each product has its own terms and renewal arrangements. Check the documents for each policy you hold.

The value of roadside assistance

Car insurance protects against the risks set out in your motor policy. Breakdown assistance is for situations such as a car that will not start or fails during a journey. Some motor policies include assistance or offer it as an extra. Others leave you to arrange a separate product.

AA Membership provides 24-hour roadside assistance across Ireland. Personal membership follows the member as a driver or passenger in another eligible car. Vehicle membership applies to the specified car, whoever is driving it. AA patrols try to repair eligible breakdowns at the roadside where possible.

Depending on the plan, Home Start can provide help at your home address and Rescue Plus can offer further recovery and onward travel benefits, subject to limits and conditions. European Breakdown Cover is a separate product for eligible trips abroad. AA Membership and car insurance remain separate products even if you hold both with AA Ireland. Check the scope of each before deciding what you need.
