AA Reveals Major Fuel Price Drop in May

Published 30th May 2025Read Time 2 min

  • Petrol: Down to an average of €1.76 per litre, down 4 cents
  • Diesel: Falls to an average of €1.68 per litre, down 9 cents
  • EV Costs: No change from last month

Fuel prices have dipped in May following a prolonged period of stability, according to the latest AA Ireland Fuel Price Survey. Petrol prices dropped by 4 cents per litre, while diesel saw a more significant drop of 9 cents per litre. EV running costs remain unchanged for a third consecutive month.

The drop in fuel prices this month is likely due to a combination of slightly reduced global oil prices, improved supply conditions, and stronger euro performance against the US dollar, which helps lower import costs for fuel in Ireland.

A spokesperson at AA Ireland, said “It’s good to see some easing at the pumps for petrol and diesel drivers, who’ve been paying more in recent months. These kinds of savings, even just a few cents, can add up quickly—especially for those with longer commutes or larger vehicles.”

As always, AA Ireland encourages drivers to compare prices locally and consider ways to cut fuel costs. “If you shop around—especially in border counties—you’ll often find cheaper rates than the national average,” Leao added.

EV owners continue to benefit from consistent, manageable running costs, especially those taking advantage of night-rate electricity plans and home charging.

AA Members can save 3c per litre on petrol and diesel and 6c per litre on milesPlus fuel at selected Circle K stations by using the AA Ireland App.
