Petrol and diesel prices rise sharply in October
AA Ireland’s latest fuel price analysis shows a renewed rise in pump prices in October, with diesel recording the larger month-on-month increase.
Petrol averaged €1.98 per litre in October, up 11.3 cents from September’s average of €1.87, an increase of approximately 6%. Diesel averaged €2.15 per litre, up 20.56 cents from €1.94 in September, an increase of approximately 11%.
Using the same tank assumptions as the monthly survey calculations, the October averages equate to approximately €79.26 for a 40 litre petrol fill and €107.38 for a 50 litre diesel fill. Compared with September, that is €4.52 more for a petrol fill and €10.28 more for diesel, or €18.08 and €41.12 respectively across four fills in the month.
Key figures:
- Petrol: €1.98 per litre on average in October, up 11.3 cents from €1.87 in September
- Diesel: €2.15 per litre on average in October, up 20.56 cents from €1.94 in September
- Cost per fill: approximately €79.26 for petrol and €107.38 for diesel
The October increase follows a relatively steady September, when petrol and diesel moved by only a few cents per litre. Diesel has now moved above €2 per litre on average, while petrol is approaching that level.
What is driving the change?
Pump prices are influenced by a range of international factors, including global oil prices, wholesale fuel costs, geopolitical developments and currency movements. Changes in these underlying costs can feed through to the prices motorists ultimately pay at the pump.
Electric vehicle charging costs
Electricity prices used in AA Ireland’s EV cost comparison have seen relatively little movement this month. This means the most notable change in October continues to be at the petrol and diesel pumps rather than in typical home EV charging costs.
Vehicle maintenance plays an important role
AA Ireland is reminding motorists that regular vehicle maintenance can improve fuel efficiency and help reduce running costs.
Simple checks such as maintaining the correct tyre pressure, servicing your vehicle regularly and replacing worn air filters can all help improve efficiency.
