Engaging Campaign for E-Scooter Awareness

The campaign, spearheaded by a creative TV advertisement, incorporates video-on-demand, radio spots, digital audio, social media, and outdoor advertising to reach a diverse audience. Set in an office scenario, a relatable ‘newbie’ e-scooter character mingles with other ‘vehicles’ to illustrate the key “Rules of the Road” for e-scooters.

Key Rules for E-Scooter Use Starting 20 May

  • Minimum Age: E-scooter operators must be over 16 years old.
  • Permitted Zones: E-scooters are welcome in cycle lanes, bus lanes, and on regional to national roads.
  • Restricted Zones: Usage is banned on footpaths, pedestrian zones, and motorways.
  • Speed Limit: E-scooters have a top speed of 20 km/h.
  • Carriage Restrictions: No passengers or goods, and e-scooters must not have a seat.
  • Bicycle Regulations Compliance: E-scooters are subject to the same careful road-sharing rules as bicycles.

Road Sharing and E-Scooter Safety

As of 20 May, under the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, e-scooters are officially recognized as lawful on public roads when operated within the outlined regulations. Non-compliance or reckless use may result in fines.

A Statement from RSA’s Chief Executive

Sam Waide, Chief Executive of the RSA, stresses the significance of these regulations, urging all road users to familiarize themselves with the laws related to e-scooters. The campaign’s extensive reach aims to foster mutual understanding and safe road-sharing practices.

The Goal of the RSA Campaign

This RSA initiative seeks to cultivate harmony on the roads, reminding us that whether on e-scooters, bikes, or in cars, we are all sharing the same space. Motorists are reminded to exhibit caution, maintaining a safe distance when passing e-scooter users.

With the RSA’s robust e-scooter campaign, road safety remains a top priority. Embracing these new regulations will help ensure a safer journey for everyone on Ireland’s roads. For more information on e-scooter safety and regulations, visit RSA.
