Car gear problems

Car not shifting gears, or stuck in gear?

Car not shifting gears? Here’s what it means

A car gear problem usually shows up as grinding when you change gear, trouble getting into first or reverse, or a lever that feels loose or stuck. The cause is normally the clutch not releasing fully, worn gear linkage, or wear inside the gearbox. Most gear problems give warning signs before they leave you stuck.

Don’t worry if you’re not sure what’s wrong. Book a check at an AA Car Service Centre near you, tell us what you’ve noticed, and we’ll take it from there. Gear faults tend to get worse, so it’s worth getting them looked at early.

What causes a car gear shift problem?

If the clutch doesn’t fully separate when you press the pedal, gears grind and first or reverse can be hard to select at a standstill. This is the most common car first gear problem. It can come from a fault in the clutch hydraulics or a worn clutch.

Cables or rods connect the gear lever to the gearbox. When their bushes wear or a cable stretches, the lever feels sloppy and you can end up with a gear stuck problem, where you can’t get in or out of a gear.

These small rings help each gear engage smoothly. When they wear, you’ll usually hear grinding going into one particular gear, often second or third, even with the clutch fully down.

Low or old gearbox oil can make changes stiff and noisy. If the level is low, there’s usually a leak, and that needs fixing as well as a top-up.

Bearings inside the gearbox can wear with age and mileage. A whine or hum that changes from gear to gear is the usual sign. It’s best checked early, before the wear spreads to other parts.

Mounts hold the gearbox in place. When they wear, the gearbox can move as you drive, causing clunks, a vibrating lever or the car jumping out of gear.

Automatics can shift late, jerk or lock into one gear to protect themselves when they detect a fault. That needs a proper diagnostic check rather than driving on.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Car Gear Problems

The most common cause is a clutch that isn’t fully releasing, often from a hydraulic fault or a worn clutch. Worn gear linkage, worn synchromesh or low gearbox oil can also stop gears engaging. Book a check and we’ll test drive the car to find out which part is at fault.

If first is hard to select when you’re stopped, the clutch may not be releasing fully. Try pressing the pedal right down and waiting a second before selecting first. If it still grinds or won’t go in, have the clutch and gear linkage checked before it gets worse.

A gear that’s stuck usually points to worn or broken gear linkage, a clutch that isn’t releasing, or wear inside the gearbox. Don’t force the lever. Stop safely, switch off, press the clutch down and try gently. If it won’t move, call for help.

Grinding on every change usually points to the clutch not releasing fully. Grinding into one gear only, often second or third, suggests worn synchromesh inside the gearbox. Low gearbox oil can make it worse. Our mechanics can tell you which it is after a test drive.

A car that pops out of gear usually has worn gear linkage, worn gearbox mounts or wear inside the gearbox. It can be dangerous if it happens while you’re overtaking or climbing a hill, so book a check rather than holding the lever in place as you drive.

If the gears still engage and the problem is mild, you can usually drive gently to a garage. If the car jumps out of gear, gets stuck in one gear or won’t select a gear at all, don’t drive on. Stop safely and call for help.

It depends on the fault and your car. Adjusting the linkage or topping up gearbox oil is a smaller job, while repairing wear inside the gearbox takes much longer. We’ll diagnose the problem and give you a price before we start, and nothing goes ahead without your OK.

Yes. Automatics don’t have a clutch pedal, so faults show up as late or jerky changes, slipping, or the car stuck in one gear with a warning light on. Many automatics go into a protective mode when they detect a fault, so book a diagnostic check rather than driving on.

You can get your gears checked at any of our AA Car Service Centres in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Newbridge and Sligo. Enter your Eircode when you book online and we’ll match you to your nearest centre. All our centres are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
