Nutters on the M50 caught Tailgating to skip the toll

The AA hates tolls and we have never been fans of the barrier-free toll on the M50. It costs a fortune to run and we would all have been better off if they had left it toll free. Even so, there is no excuse for this madness – drivers tailgating right behind trucks to avoid paying a €3 toll.

This has been a problem for a while and it is obviously very dangerous. AA has been briefed on it by eFlow – the toll bridge operators – but they were reluctant to publicise it in case it encouraged more idiots to chance their arm. It doesn’t work, by the way. In theory you can stop your plate being read initially but there are also forward facing cameras which will catch you.

eFlow and the Garda between them have now targeted this behaviour and have caught 41 drivers in the last 3 weeks, and 106 people since the end of November. We have absolutely no sympathy for them.
