In the aftermath of Hurricane Ophelia, many people are wondering how damages to their car and property will tie in to their current insurance policies. AA Director of Consumer Affairs, Conor Faughnan, spoke on Ireland AM to those wondering what to do if they need to make a claim.
Faughnan advises “damages to the home caused by the storm such as a broken window or fallen roof slates are covered by normal home insurance, however, what some people may not realize is that outbuildings; gates and sheds are often excluded”.
In regards to motor insurance “comprehensive car insurance covers all damage caused by the storm, but if you’re on third party fire and theft insurance, damages to your car caused fallen tree branches or flying debris is not covered“.
With further unsettled weather and some heavy rainfall expected over the coming weeks, it is advisable that homeowners take any necessary steps, including repairs and replacements to minimize any risk to their property in the coming months.
